I believe that this is one of the greatest songs ever written. Great artists like Elvis, Carrie Underwood, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Alan Jackson, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and others have covered this song. Most of them, Country Music and Folk Artists.
My Arrangement
Personally, I prefer the Country/Folk Acoustic Guitar Version for myself. Because it turns a beautiful song into an every-man prayer. The History of “How Great Thou Art
Interestingly Enough, the song was written in Sweden by a man named Carl Boberg:
Boberg said of the writing of his song, “It was in 1885, and in the time of year when everything seemed to be in its richest coloring; the birds were singing in trees and wherever they could find a perch. On a particular afternoon, some friends and I had been to Kronobäck where we had participated in an afternoon service. As we were returning a thunderstorm began to appear on the horizon. We hurried to shelter. There were loud claps of thunder, and the lighting flashed across the sky. Strong winds swept over the meadows and billowing fields of grain. However, the storm was soon over and the clear sky appeared with a beautiful rainbow.” (Source)
The beauty that followed the storm led Boberg to write the ageless lyrics to “How Great Thou Art”. Later, it was sang to the melody of a Swedish Folk Song. After being translated into Polish. And then Russian, it made its way to America.
Rev. and Mrs. Stuart K. Hine returned from a mission to Poland and wrote new lyrics for the song. Also, they created their own musical arrangement.
